April of this year saw the opening of the new highway between Khorfakkan and Sharjah, a  convenient new route connecting Dubai to the East Coast. With stunning views through the Hajar mountains and a 2.7km tunnel, it is an awesome route to start your weekend diving with us in the Gulf.

Turns out though, it’s not quite as convenient on the return journey…

The great views are as such due to high elevation of the road which climbs as high as 1300m above sea level. Driving home after a great weekend diving is generally most people’s last concern but if you are planning on taking the new highway it may be worth reconsidering your route.

All divers are aware of the significant risk of flying after diving but it is very easy to forget that some as simple as driving up a mountain can pose similar risks. Heading to altitudes in excess of 300m above sea level increases the pressure difference between the nitrogen in your body and your surroundings. As a result your body can begin to release nitrogen much faster than recommended and increases the risk of developing Decompression Sickness. Nitrogen is still being released from our tissues many hours after diving and the recommendation for going to altitude is the same rules we follow for flying, 12 hours after a single dive or 18 after multiple dives.

So on your next trip over for a weekend under the waves with us, stay safe and choose your route home carefully!
